preDevCamp is less than one week away!

It’s been an amazing ride over the past 6 months, but now the day we’ve all been waiting for is less than one week away.  The SDK is available for all to enjoy, webOS can be hacked to our heart’s content, and there’s already a thriving homebrew community with over 100 apps and counting.  These accomplishments set the stage for an explosion of knowledge on August 8.

Speaking of explosions…

We now has over 1000 registered attendees!  Our numbers have been steadily climbing, but we saw a significant spike once the SDK was released to the public.  Palm has worked very hard to ensure we would have the SDK in time, and they deserve many thanks for their commitment to preDevCamp.

preDevCamp Live
Don’t feel left out if an event hasn’t gelled in your area, you’ll still be able to participate via our preDevCamp Live page (coming soon).  Several of our flagship cities are preparing to stream their events (San Francisco, Kansas City, San Diego, and Dallas, to name a few), plus we have the #preDevCamp irc channel on Freenode.  And you can still grab a friend and meet up at your favorite coffee shop without feeling pressured to plan an “event.”  Anyone in the world is welcome to tune in with us and build an app.

Contests and prizes ahoy!
Did I mention that preDevCamp’s gonna have prizes?  ‘Cause we’re gonna have prizes!  Several US cities have been sent some free copies of O’Reilly’s canonical book on webOS development, and even bigger prizes will be announced throughout the week.  Sponsorship opportunities are still available, so if you want to see which preDevCamper can build the coolest app for your service, email info@predevcamp.org and tell us what you have in mind.

What you should do now

  • Install the SDK (if you haven’t done so already).  Some cities may have an installfest planned as part of their events, but it’ll save time and strain on Palm’s servers if you can do this ahead of time.  (Organizers, it might not be a bad idea to have all the files backed up on a thumbdrive.  I’m just sayin!)
  • Configure your IDE. Palm officially supports Eclipse, but there’s also an Emacs module you might find useful.  If you know of any other Mojo-enabled environments, please tell us about them in the comments.
  • Help get the word out. Post about preDevCamp on your blog or send a message to your favorite mailing list.  There’s also a global Facebook group you can invite your friends to.

Komodo Edit (free) / IDE (paid) also has support for webOS development (with full code completion).

(addon is in development with debug to follow after alpha stage)
