Big updates from preDevCamp

Last week was a busy one! Lots of announcements and conversations about preDevCamp & Palm, between preDevCamp & Palm and within preDevCamp & Palm. It’s time to clear things up and talk about the future:
- whurley and gio have stepped down from the organization team. I want to extend a personal ‘thank you’ to the both of them. preDevCamp would not exist without them and we wouldn’t be where we are without them. They’ve both expressed their good wishes to the event and interested to see how things pan out
- With the departure of whurley and gio, Lisa Brewster and Greg Stevenson have joined the main team, to help ensure that preDevCamp goes well. Lisa and Greg bring a great amount of experience and excitement about Camps of varying kinds and we’ve had some great discussions, talking about where preDevCamp will go
- Finally, we’ve had lengthy discussions about the timing of preDevCamp. A large number of cities have expressed concerns about the short notice for the preDevCamp date. In addition, the proximity of the WWDC event mean that many who intended to preDevCamp are going to miss out.
To ensure that everybody is as ready as they can be, we’re in agreement that preDevCamp needs to be pushed out a little longer. We’ve taken a look at the conference schedule this summer as well as worked out how much time is needed to arrange a preDevCamp and we’ve selected August 8th as the date. This may feel a while out, but it means there’s plenty of time to get locations sorted out.
We’ll be providing content on organization and also on the technical aspects of the Pre and WebOS between now and then. We’ll also be retooling the site to make communication easier between preDevCampers.
Palm are being very supportive and we’re working out the best ways for them to provide assistance to the numerous events. I’m confident that we’ll be seeing some material support coming our way soon.
Let me finish by re-iterating:
preDevCamp is on Saturday, August 8th, 2009

This post will raise a few questions about the date of preDevCamp.
We’ve tried to select a date which is least likely to clash with other, comparable events. We hope we’ve achieved this aim.
It may seem a long time to wait, but we’ll be providing content on this page in the run up to preDevCamp in the form of podcasts and online training to prepare you for the actual day. We want to make sure that you can go beyond Hello World! applications during preDevCamp!

A big hearty +1.
To be honest, I really couldn’t fathom the reason for wanting to hold PreDevCamp so close to launch. With so few people having access to the SDK or dev devices to play with, it would have meant a lot of stumbling around in the dark.
Moving it down a few months means there’s a better chance everyone’s had a chance to play with the goodies so it’ll make for more of a show-and-tell and active hands-on experience, which is what’s made the other DevCamps so much fun.
Looking forward to it.

I will second that +1. I was on the fence about making it to the original date, but August should definitely work out. I think it was a smart move and can’t wait to see what all is coming next.

Good move. I definitely agree with this approach for August 8th. Honestly, we had already decided to delay it in Des Moines for the very reasons you mentioned. We had not set a date yet; but with a change to the 8th there is a good chance we will now be having a camp with the rest of the country.

Solid. Waiting for the SDK is a good thing. We’ll have more to talk about.

I’ve never attended a “camp” event before. Over how many days does the camp event last? Is it one day, one weekend, one week?

Hey PreDevCamp orgs.
I was gonna reach out through the contacts page, but that still has Whurley and Gio as the main contacts, guessing that’s not correct any more.
We’re organizing (with O’Reilly) InsideMobile, mobile developers conference in San Jose in July. Would love to work on some cross event promotion, help support the Pre community and spread the word.

Strictly speaking, it’s down to the local city organizers, but we anticipate that it will be a single day

This is great news! I’d definitely be interested in understanding more about the template around which the Camp will be organized – what are the goals and intended takeaways, etc.
Cheers, and keep up the awesome work.

Are there any ways to contact the new organizers? Maybe something easy as twitter again?
