preDevCamp Date Announcement

Ready Set Go

Today’s the day you’ve all been waiting for! Today is the day that we announce preDevCamp! With the release of the Pre on June 6th, we figured we’d give you a week to compose yourselves. Therefore, preDevCamp will be on Saturday June 13th.

Unfortunately, this fantastic piece of news is tainted. We’ve fought an uphill struggle with Palm as they tried to make up their minds as to whether they wanted to support this community or not. Unfortunately, Palm doesn’t quite understand the value of a community like preDevCamp and, having cut back and forth for quite some time, have finally made it clear that they have no interest in actively supporting preDevCamp.

In the end communities are made of individuals, and everyone involved is entitled to their opinion. Rather than bring all of that here, we have all explained our individual views and positions in regard to Plam on our personal blogs:

Giovanni: “Palm doesn’t get it
Whurley: “Exit Whurley Stage Left
Dan: “preDevCamp – Palm’s missed opportunity

Rest assured that the resources needed will be available to the community to ensure that it does not suffer due to Palm’s indifference. Just remember that regardless the various opinions of Palm, you are entitled to your own.

We’re excited to see what you guys come up with. There’s a lot of talent and enthusiasm out there and preDevCamp is still the largest development camp in history.

I’m disappointed that the partnership broke down, but San Diego’s still a go for June 13th. I’ll announce location and more details next week.

This is disappointing news, and, frankly, shocking. I believed (and still hold out hope) that Palm is going to embrace the grassroots webOS development community beyond the typical “corporate developer portal”.

Anyone that is part of an orphaned preDevCamp that will not be continuing is welcome to join the community at http://www.weboshelp.net. We’re a small group, but perhaps now the largest active webOS community outside of Palm’s official (NDA’d) developer portal.

Folks, we’re 100% supportive of preDevCamp and anybody who is interested in developing for webOS.

We just aren’t ready to pull the trigger on everything publicly yet. So it’s tricky for us to navigate around confidentiality and find a way to engage that works for everybody.

But we’re committed to continuing the conversation. Taking the NDA out of the equation was intended to open the door, not close it.

    Thanks.

Given Palm’s attitude toward the idea of people developing apps for the Pre, why are you guys bothering? It’s getting down to the point where a Netbook can run just about anything I need and if I want help, there is a metric ton of developer’s help available regardless of whether I set it up for Linux or Window$.

Palm hasn’t done a darn thing worth paying attention to for several years now, and they appear to be continuing to shoot themselves in the foot with a machine gun.

    Feh.

This is somewhat unrelated, but I wanted to point it out in case it was somehow missed.

This entry has a photo of a space shuttle launch, and the Giovanni entry has a photo of the 1986 destruction of the Challenger. I find it in *very* poor taste to evoke that tragedy to describe a breakdown between Palm and this group. It has almost the same effect as posting a photo of the World Trade Center, and then a photo of the aftermath of September 11th.

Please consider changing this: it reflects poorly on the spirit of this community. Thanks.

I totally agree. That had escaped my attention.

    I’ve changed the picture accordingly

In light of Palm’s rejection of the Palm developer community (http://predevcamp.org/2009/05/21/predevcamp-date-announcement/), I am no longer interested in switching to the Palm Pre. Palm’s move means I won’t have the range of apps iPhone users have, which makes the Pre, for my purposes, a crippled device.

Palm’s approach to the Palm developer community (http://predevcamp.org/2009/05/21/predevcamp-date-announcement/) means I would have a wider variety of apps available for an old Zire 71 than a Pre. In light of this, of course I’ll switch to an iPhone.

I’d never heard of preDevCamp until I saw Pam Deziel’s “optimistic,” “Palm supports preDevCamp 100%” post to the Palm Developer Network Blog this morning: http://pdnblog.palm.com/2009/05/a-predevcamp-update/
